Dasara is one of the major celebrated festivals in India which is celebrated at the end of Navratri every year. People celebrate this festival by burning the towering effigies of Ravana which is the symbol of evil. Effigies of Kumbhkarna and Meghnada are also being burnt along with Ravana on this day. Dasara is also known as Vijayadashmi in some places.
The story behind the Scene: – This day is being celebrated as the victory of Good over Evil. According to the Epic Ramayana Ravana, the king of Lanka abducted Devi Sita who was the wife of Lord Rama and took her to his country during their exile. There was a great war between Lord Rama and Demon Ravana for nine days and at the end of the tenth day Lord Rama killed Ravana and brought her wife back to their home. According to the other story on this Maa Durga killed the demon Mahishasur to establish Dharma on earth. Dasara is also known as the triumph of virtue over sin or immorality.
When Celebrated? : – According to Hindu calendar, this festival is celebrated on the tenth day of the bright half of the month Ashwin. This festival comes on the tenth day of the Sharad Navratri every year. It usually comes in the month of September or October. This year the Dasara 2017 festival will be celebrated on Saturday 30 September 2017.
How is Dasara celebrated : – Dasara is celebrated in different ways in different parts of our country. Dasara is celebrated by enacting Ramleela which moves all around the story of Lord Rama and Devi Sita. For nine days the entire story of Lord Rama is being enacted and on the tenth day, the towering effigies of Ravana, Kumbhakarna, and Maeghnada are being burnt with fireworks. Dasara is the sign of victory of truth over sin, good over evil and much more.

- In South, India Dasara is celebrated as a nine-day festival celebration of Navratri.
- In Mysore Dasara is celebrated extravagantly with a grand procession. It includes Elephants and camels as the part of this grand celebration whereas the Mysore fort remains fully lit for all 10 days.
- In Eastern India, this grand festival is celebrated as Vijayadashami which is also referred to the day of Durga Puja.
- In Himachal Pradesh, the Dasara of Kullu is very famous which is celebrated for seven days with various customs and rituals.
- In Nepal, Dasara festival is celebrated for 15 days.
